Community Advocacy Center

Malawi is the world's poorest country, and among them, persons with disabilities and their families continue to live in poverty, the most excluded from the community. So, Miral Welfare Foundation Malawi built up Community Advocacy Center sponsored by KOICA for persons with disabilities and their families living in two villages, Khokhwa and Kachala in Nkcoma, Malawi.

In Malawi, various committees are culturally formed in the community, and these committees play a role in solving problems in the community and selecting recipients of welfare programs. However, there was no suitable place to hold a meeting in Nkhoma, so it had to be held in a long-neglected warehouse, which was a very inconvenient place for persons with disabilities to use.

As a result, persons with disabilities and their families were often excluded from various welfare programs in the community, forcing them to continue their poor lives. To solve this problem, Miral Welfare Foundation Malawi built Community Advocacy Center in the Nkhoma as part of the KOICA Civil Society Partnership Program for the smooth operation of PWD committee and CBICC committee.

Disability-friendly space

Community Advocacy Center is a disability-friendly space in that it is located near an primary school that is easily accessible to residents with disabilities, and makes the movement of persons with disabilities convenient by installing a ramp inside the center. And this became the basis for residents with disabilities to live as members of the community.

On the 12th and 13th of last month, the completion ceremony of Community Advocacy Center was held in two villages, Khokhwa and Kachala, and local officials and local residents all participated to celebrate the completion. And then, we had time to sign a MOU(memorandum of understanding) for the operation and management of the center, and Miral Welfare Foundation Malawi had also promised to provide quality education to facilitate CBICC committee and Farm Club in the center.

I am very happy to see beautifully built Community Advocacy Center. From now on, we all have to work together to ensure that no children with disabilities are left at home without being educated in the community.

Community Advocacy Center is a symbolic entity that reminds us that there are residents with disabilities in our community. Now we have to reach out to residents with disabilities, and Malawi government will also do its best.
