Miral Welfare Foundation Kenya has been carrying out ‘Strengthening Self-reliance of the Families with disabled child in Kisumu County, Kenya’ for 50 families who have children with disability in the Kisumu county located in western part of Kenya since 2017. This project was launched for supporting mothers who are unable to participate in economic activities because of taking their children with disabilities in whole day.
In this project, community people are recruited to provide care-giver service for helping children with disabilities in order to let those mothers have spare time engaging in social activities. These care-givers not only take care of children with disabilities, but also enhance understanding on disability through regular empowerment training. In addition, it has formed a deep sense of solidarity among them.
In the process of the activity, care-givers voluntarily organized a self-help group named 'Miral Self Help Group' and in May 2018, it was officially registered at the department of social welfare in Kisumu County Government as a local community self-governing group. In the future, 'Miral Self Help Group' might be recognized as an official self help group formed by community people and would be able to receive systematic management and training support from the government.
The 'Miral Self Help Group' plans to implement various activities in order to improve the human rights of people with disabilities, strengthen the capacity of vulnerable people, and support income generation activities.
Miral Welfare Foundation is looking forward to promoting the awareness on disability led by community people voluntarily and actively so as to make the community left no one behind.
