Activity Report on Syria refugee in Lebanon

by the First Emergency Relief Team

The first emergency relief team has been implementing emergency relief activities in Saad Nayel Province, Bekka Plain in Syria since last 19 December. They attended UN Coordination Meeting, strengthen network, conduct survey on the needs of family in a refugee camp and dispatch emergency relief items during a month.

According to the official status, it is said that there are more than 880 thousand persons who are Syria refugee living in Lebanon. This number is approximately 21.3% of the total population of Lebanon which is four million persons. Since Lebanon is considered convenient country to go over the board among five neighborhood countries, many refugee comes to this area. For the comparably rich refugee, they sometimes live in a building. But for the ones who rushed out has to live in a tent or live in an uncompleted building with only blankets.

We have assembled informations on eight camp and 247 families among the target we have selected as beneficiary of relief item dispatch by Miral Welfare Foundation. As a procedure of selection, the local researcher researched data in eight camps. And then staff of Miral Welfare Foundation finalized the selection after visiting selected family`s residence. There was one camp where we had to notify that they have to wait or stop the conflict between one another due to family matters. But mostly, they were very cooperative and waited for their turn. Also, they came to office with inquiries regarding available support according to their situation.

Representative of 247 families each received voucher in 13 January and was distributed food kit from 15 to 16 January. Food kit was consisted of rice, wheat, beans, green beans, powdered milk, sugar, salt, flour and napkin. Both dispatching personnel and receiving person couldn`t hide their gladness. Their face was alike a child receiving a long-awaited gift. There also were many people who were interested in program provided by Miral Welfare Foundation. Program was consisted of Mother education for educating toddler, English, Computer, Soccer, Health and Hygiene education. We expect that there will be a positive effect on education for refugee, capacity building and emotional support.

Mr. Yasher(42) doesn`t have mobility for 6 months due to his cerebral palsy from his leg due to the effect of gun shot wound. He said "My five children and my wife and me are living by meal support fund, which is $27, provided by UNHCR. We always lack food. Considering children, we can only live for a month with 13kg. Especially powdered milk is useful for us due to it`s high price and also it`s nutritional part to children. Thank you very much."

Miral Welfare Foundation is going send the second emergency relief team from 13 January in order to implement the second food supply and third residence and item support. Also considering that most of the children can not afford attending school, we are planning on operating school for the children in refugee.
